It didn't look like a good day to begin with

At 9:15, the departure time from Sheppard Yonge station, there were fewer than 15 of the expected 64 of us, not counting the non-skiers. Where was everybody?

But onward we went, on Bus 84, and then on foot from Bathurst-Sheppard to Earl Bales Ski & Snowboard Centre. Then began the task of getting everyone organized in classes, getting measured for equipment, and getting everyone seated and quiet for Recreationist Heather Kerr's address. After that, it was off to the rental shop to get helmets, ski boots, and skis.

By eleven, the first handful of MicroSkills participants were out on the snow, on the pony hill, walking in circles with one ski on.

While most of the learners were out on the pony hill, a handful of advanced skiers and learners--including Teachers Wendy and Waldi--headed off to the main hill. Soon, they were joined by a class of other brave learners doing their turns with skis in pizza formation.

The weather didn't disappoint either. Although there was a nice dumping of white stuff around eight in the morning, we got another two awesome snow squalls and wicked winds driving the minus 7 temperature to a minus 19 windchill. Visibility was down to 30 feet or so. It was a good thing we had a chalet to retreat to, where we could join those holding the fort--or at least a mug of hot chocolate. And then the sun came out again.

Welcome to Canada!

By 2 p.m., most of the equipment had been returned, and most of the tired skiers retired and homeward bound. Hopefully, they'll remember to share their pictures and videos on their blogs!

See You Tomorrow: Bundle Up!

Most of us will be there around 9 a.m. tomorrow, whatever the weather--actually, the "worse," the better! Let it snow! Please do not be late, as we'll be leaving from Sheppard Yonge at 9:15 a.m. on bus service 84, westbound for the junction of Sheppard and Bathurst.

Don't forget to bring gloves (the plastic, waterproof kind is best, from the dollar store), waterproof snowpants, good walking shoes, a camera, and some money for snacks (pizza, burgers, coffee, and other junk food's available at the chalet).

And give yourself a pat on the back. You did a great job to check this blog!

Children's Education: Parent-Teacher Interviews

Today we kicked off theme of the week, Children's Education, of course, with a discussion on getting kids up for school and attending parent-teacher interviews.

The video we watched is as follows:

Various classmates have signed up to transcribe the 8-minute 50-second clip, in one-minute installments. As soon as the transcripts are ready, we'll try to stitch them together and post them here.

What to Bring for Our Field Trip to the Ski Centre

On January 28th, our LINC Language Centre will be going on a field trip to Earl Bales Ski and Snowboard Centre.

As part of the lesson will be on snow, you are advised to wear warm clothing, such as tuques, gloves or mitts, winter jackets, and snowboots. Those who are skiing or snowboarding should also wear snow pants that are waterproof.

Please be there on time or a little early as it takes time to fit on the equipment--skis, ski boots, and helmets.

As there is a chalet there with a fireplace, washrooms, and cafeteria, you can bring your lunch or buy a nice big cup of hot chocolate and relax there. Or how about a camera to take lots of pictures with?

Let's have fun on the snow!
