Grand Old Dame Having a Facelift, Grand as Ever

Despite the boarded-up main entrance and ongoing changes within, the Toronto Reference Library continued to impress her visitors, including us MicroSkills field trippers today.

Classmates Ling, Qiaoxia, Lydia, Angela, Mizuho, and Judy pose tamely with Donald, but where are the funny poses? Courtesy Mizuho's camera; not pictured is Alice and two of Donald's students, June and John.
After Mizuho and Ling had gotten their library cards issued, the trip kicked off with a tour of ESL resources on the fifth level by Library Assistant Liana Wang-Wu. There we saw an impressive collection of multimedia, pedagogical, and both circulation and browse-only items. We also stared at the mighty OED, also available for free through the public library's website.

Donald then led us on a walking tour of the library, including his favourite view of the Don Valley.

Courtesy Mizuho; note to self: check the memory card slot before every field trip duh!
All too soon, it was time for lunch. We took the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with the Bloor-Yonge neighbourhood as we hoofed down to Ginger Restaurant, wolfed down our Viet-Thai orders, and goofed off a little.

Field Trip to TRL, Sep. 27th

UPDATE: Bring an umbrella! It will be soggy! But at least we'll know a great place to be in inclement weather!

Our next trip is to the Toronto Reference Library, perhaps the nicest and biggest one in the Toronto Public Library system.

Let's meet at the Library entrance at approximately 10:00 - 10:15 a.m. The Level 6 - 7 class should be there as well. Donald will lead us on a tour of the library, with special emphasis on the ESL section upstairs.

Here we are at Accesspoint on Danforth

Update: United Way's Press Release

Live blog earlier:
The response seems to be unanticipated. Hordes of participants from who knows where have descended upon this pretty yellow building at Victoria Park and Danforth, packing out the hall, upstairs and downstairs, to what looks like way beyond capacity.
And still they're streaming in, at 11:55 a.m., lucky ones getting to the food (some sort of wrap) and others milling around amidst the loud music. Yet others find an Internet terminal and blog the event. They're out of T-shirts, TTC tokens, and--my guess--food as well.
The camera crews are here waiting for things to happen. Well, at least we had an uneventful ride here from 200 Consumers Rd. Nur with Jenan had to bail, the former not feeling well. About five others took off after pocketing their tokens but before we made it to the bus stop on Victoria Park. From then on, it was smooth sailing, except possibly for the shortage of a couple of tokens and T-shirts. So, more than 50 LINC participants from 200 MicroSkills here continue to wait, at 12:01 p.m., as four cops from Toronto Police and another busload of people come in!
